Deadliest blast Somalia has seen, death toll rises to 300
On Saturday, a huge truck exploded in Mogadishu, Somalia. Government buildings, hotels and restaurants lined the K5 junction where the blast happened. It destroyed several buildings and set dozens on fire. Furthermore, after the bomb detonated, four gunmen entered the “Safari Hotel”, and started shooting at the patrons.
Deadliest Somalia has ever seen
The death toll has risen to 300 and approximately 300 people are injured. The bomb blast was executed in a region which is highly populated, and majority of the civilian population was killed. There are barely any empty beds in the hospitals, and doctors haven’t slept in days. The sound of the screams of the victims, and the bereaved laments of their relatives echo down the hospital corridors. Somalia’s government is blaming al-Qaida linked al-Shabab for the attack. The group has made no comment yet.
“…a national disaster.”
Countries like Turkey, Ethiopia, and Kenya have offered medical aid for the aftermath of what the Information Minister called a “national disaster”. Somalian President Mohamed Abdullahi, joined the line of people who had turned up to donate blood for the victims. He declared a three-day mourning period.
The United States has condemned the attack. The US called the attacks cowardly. Furthermore, it said that the attack, further, fortified the United States’ commitment to protecting Somalia’s safety; and will continue to combat terrorism. The US will increase drone strikes and other efforts against al-Shabab, which is also fighting the Somali military.
A broken country.
This recent attack has destroyed a country which was already tearing at its seams due to poverty and war. It might have snubbed any hope that Somalia had of recovering from its dire state.
