Robotics being now categorized into many types, legged robots is one of a type and you might have come across many such type of legged robot’s images especially if searched for NASA robots or military robots. Legged robots are specifically used here cause of adaptive motion as per terrain conditions.
Well coming to the title now, researchers from Massachusetts Institute Of Technology, Cambridge, US have developed a Robotic Cheetah ! This Robot as you can see in the image is a 4 legged robot and can achieve a maximum speed of 30mph making it fastest legged robot today.
Now reporting technically you can see in the video that the robot mimics the leaping action of a natural Cheetah. The leaping and running actions in all makes the robot to take huge and long strides that eventually makes it cover a long distance in less speed.
Thus this is what a Cheetah does, taking long strides stretching its legs to a greater extent and again contracting them. The cycle continues to gain speed of 120 km/h in a very short span. Well normally a maximum speed limit for a car on express free ways.
This MIT Cheetah contains the custom electric motor designed by Jeffrey Lang, Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT and the amplifier designed by David Otten, research engineer in MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics. The key behind the strides of the robot is in the programming algorithm of each leg that exerts pressure on the ground proportional to speed required. Increase in speed makes the algorithm to increase the pressure to be exerted and vice-versa.
Well guys this is a giant leap in robotics especially in legged robotics by achieving such high speed bot resembling a Cheetah. Many applications in emergency medical cases, military purposes can be achieved by this bot and many more can be counted now ! Signing off for now and happy randomizing
