Refugee ban lifted, no new order issued by Trump

Refugee ban lifted; new screening rules put in place

Donald Trump had institutionalized a travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries. These countries are, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, and Syria. He issued this immigration order in early January. He issued it for 90 days and suspended the refugee programme for 120 days. The country reacted with mass protests and the entire country showcased their dissent. Iraq was later removed from this list when it was revised in March. Syrian refugees got their visas validated and the ban was lifted for them.

Reactions to Trump’s order

AlJazeera reported that Shirin Sinnar from Stanford said, “…by alienating partners, diminishing international trust in the United States and feeding extremist narratives that the United States is at war with Islam.”

President Trump’s Muslim ban is illegal. The reason to say so is simple. One religion can’t be favoured over another by a country. The American immigration system, apparently, needs to be reviewed. Trump wanted to achieve this with the ban. Many organizations have spoken up against the ban.

However, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted in support of refugees. Canada will give refuge to all refugees fleeing war or persecution. “…Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength.”, he wrote.

The ban’s 120-day leash ran out. The 120-day ban came to an end today with no further order issued by Trump. Refugees have always faced a long waiting list and backlog. Trump has issued new screening procedures which remain unknown.

Even so, the refugee inflow might reduce to a bare minimum. Trump placed a cap on 40,000 refugees which gives only a maximum limit. Only time will tell.
