With the advent of Chinese Smartphone makers in the Indian Markets, Smartphones even with rich hardware specifications have become affordable for the people in the country. Smartphones coming from the houses of companies such as Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo etc. are all feature rich and yet do not loosen one’s purses’ strings. One such company trying its luck in the country is China’s LeEco. After its successful launches such as Le 1s, Le 1s Eco, LeEco has recently launched yet another super affordable yet feature rich Smartphone, namely, Le 2.
Le 2 , with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage is priced at a meagre 11,999 INR. Our team got a review unit of Le2 and after playing with the said phone for a reasonable amount of time, have come up with my review as follows:

The look and feel of the Le 2 is simple yet refreshing. We got the Rose Gold variant for review although LeEco has announced 2 more variants, grey and silver for Le 2. On the front sits a 5.5 inch full HD touchscreen display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The sides and rear have a buffed metal finish except for bands of shiny polished metal where the sides meet the front and back. On the right reside the usual power and volume keys while a dual nano SIM try is located on the left side. On the bottom are the USB Type-C port and 2 speaker grills, although it is worth noting that only 1 speaker grill works. The other one is just to satisfy symmetry. It is worth mentioning that Le 2 does not possess a 3.5mm port for ear-phones and instead USB Type C compatible ear-phones are to be used for listening to music, videos etc. The top edge of the phone also houses an infrared emitter. The back panel comprises of the rear camera and LeTV logo.
Overall, weighing just over 153 grams, the design of the Le 2 feels premium highly due to the metallic finish and the rose gold color did work for me.
Le 2 sports a 5.5 inches full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. With a pixel density of 403 ppi, all the text, icons, images just look simply beautiful on the screen. The colors are crisp and sharp. It feels great to watch videos and view other things while working with the phone. The said smartphone supports ample amount of brightness so as to work under bright light conditions without any hindrance.
Hardware and Software Performance (8/10)
Le 2 comes with a 1.8 GHz + Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 Octa Core processor. While it is common to have 652 chipset in sub 15k phones, one major advantage Le 2 possesses is smooth functioning of various apps simultaneously. With 3 GB of random access memory at its disposal, the multi-tasking isn’t an issue either. The Smartphone also comes with fingerprint sensor for security purpose.
I performed several stress testing such as running 8-10 apps in the background, however didn’t notice any questionable lags. Popular apps such as Facebook, Chrome browser, WhatsApp, Hike ran smoothly.
Gaming on Le 2 got mixed results. While medium graphic games such as Temple run 2, subway surfers functioned smoothly, there were noticeable lags and frame drops while playing Asphalt Nitro, Angry birds 2 and flight simulator.
Speaking of the phone’s software, Le 2 runs LeEco’s custom ROM eUI based on Android Marshmallow. There are several tweaks you can perform here and there in the phone, courtesy eUI. Overall, software on the Le 2 is clean and looks elegant.
One major hardware shift one will observe in Le 2 is the absence of traditional 3.5 mm jack. The phone sports CLDA technology which uses USB Type C port as interface. LeEco provides CLDA compatible earphones in the box along with a USB to 3.5 mm converter.
Le 2 features a 16 megapixel rear camera which is complemented by an 8 megapixel front camera. Both the cameras performed strictly okay, and that is one specification you cannot be proud of Le 2. The camera performed pretty unevenly. The rear camera is capable of recording 4K video at 30fps and 720p slow motion video at 120fps. While the rear camera produced satisfactory images in bright daylight, the results in the dark or less light were not so good. Front camera produced above average images which are good enough to circulate across social network platforms.
Le 2 is fueled by a 3,000 mAh non-removable battery. The battery is capable enough to last a day with moderate amount of usage. However, people addicted to WhatsApp, gaming, browsing will find it difficult to negotiate a full day with this battery. However, it is worth mentioning that the said phone supports Fast Charging 2.0. I got my phone charged around 60% in a meagre 30 minutes, which are some pretty decent figures.
Le 2 with dual SIM functionality is compatible with 4G, 3G and 2G technologies. There wasn’t any drop in Wi-Fi signals and exchanges through Bluetooth performed well. The speaker and call quality was acceptable too.
Verdict (Overall: 7.5/10)
Le 2 with its aggressive pricing and decent hardware specifications is clearly trying to define the economical segment of the Indian Smartphone market providing seamless Android experience to the users. The major competitors of Le 2 will be Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and Honor 5C. However, it does offer a little extra than these phones in terms of stability and build quality. My suggestion? Go for LeEco Le 2 if you want a Smartphone with good storage, latest Android version, decent software and just an above average camera.
